About the job

Firmware Engineer – MedTech

Location: Perth (HQ) | Open to Sydney or Melbourne with flexible remote options

Hays is partnering with a rapidly scaling, VC‑backed Australian MedTech company that is delivering breakthrough medical devices and making significant progress in the regulated healthcare sector. With strong clinical impact, expanding global pathways and a high‑performing multidisciplinary team, this organisation offers a rare opportunity to lead firmware & electronics development in a mission‑driven environment.

They are seeking a senior Electronics / Firmware Engineer to act as the technical authority for electronic systems across next‑generation Class II/III medical devices.

The Role

As a senior technical leader, you will take full ownership of electronic and firmware development while mentoring engineers and shaping best‑practice design within a regulated environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as technical authority for all electronics and firmware systems
  • Leading end‑to‑end development of medical device electronics, from concept to manufacturing
  • Designing analog, digital, RF and low‑power circuits for biosignal acquisition and BLE/RF connectivity
  • Overseeing embedded firmware development (RTOS and bare-metal in C/C++)
  • Ensuring compliance with ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 62366 and IEC 62304
  • Managing and mentoring internal engineers and external development partners
  • Driving project delivery, quality standards and risk mitigation activities
  • Designing PCBs, test jigs, validation tools and manufacturing infrastructure
  • Maintaining rigorous technical documentation, SOPs and verification reports
  • Supporting supplier engagement, audits and scalable manufacturing readiness

Your Background

  • 5–10+ years’ experience in high‑reliability electronic system development
  • Strong experience with Class II/III medical devices (highly desirable)
  • Expertise in analog, digital, RF and low‑power/battery‑powered designs
  • Proven experience with Altium Designer / Altium‑365 and custom libraries
  • Embedded firmware experience (RTOS, bare‑metal; C/C++)
  • Strong knowledge of biosignal acquisition, signal processing and validation
  • Hands‑on experience with Nordic, STM32, Analog Devices or comparable MCUs
  • Deep understanding of medical device development lifecycle and QMS environments
  • Confident leadership, mentoring and cross‑functional communication skills
  • Tertiary qualification in Electronics or Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred)
  • Australian working rights (Engineers Australia membership advantageous)

Why Join?

  • Be part of a fast‑growing MedTech company delivering life‑changing technology
  • Take ownership of critical safety‑focused electronics systems
  • Influence product direction at senior technical level
  • Work with a talented, multidisciplinary team in a collaborative culture
  • Flexible working arrangements with long‑term career growth potential
