The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper Wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including GP Clinics, Primary Health Care, Counselling, community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

We are currently seeking a passionate Counsellor, Social Worker, or Psychologist to join our Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) and Mental Health team. This position plays a vital role in providing culturally safe, person centered support to Aboriginal individuals and families, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities or duties

The successful candidate will:

• Provide culturally secure counselling, case management, advocacy, and capacity building services.
• Deliver high quality support across areas including mental health, alcohol and other drugs, disability, and social and emotional wellbeing.
• Create a safe environment where clients feel respected and supported.
• Participate in group facilitation where relevant.
• Work collaboratively across organisations to ensure holistic support.
• Maintain accurate electronic case notes and complete required data reporting.
• Support team activities such as community events and health promotion initiatives.
• Demonstrate strong self management, organisation, and problem solving abilities.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Essential Criteria

• Tertiary qualification in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
• Well developed counselling skills.
• An integrated understanding of the historical context of Aboriginal people.
• Ability to manage risk and time manage a counselling caseload.
• Willingness to complete all required data collection and reporting.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.
