Harmony is the largest gold producer by volume in South Africa and is a significant operator of gold tailings retreatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, Harmony owns and operates the Hidden Valley mine and owns 50% of the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. In Australia, Harmony owns the high-grade CSA copper mine in Cobar, NSW and is constructing the Eva Copper Mine in Cloncurry, QLD with first production targeted for the second half of the 2028 calendar year. These assets are supported by the Harmony Australasia regional corporate office located in Milton, Brisbane.
The Eva Copper Mine is a significant and strategically important project for Harmony marking a major milestone in the company’s copper growth strategy and its long-term commitment to Northwest Queensland. The mine will have a minimum life of 15 years and will involve mining multiple open cut pits providing copper bearing ore to a concentrator. Front-end engineering design is complete, and mine construction is expected to take up to 30 months with first production targeted for the second half of the 2028 calendar year.
The Senior Engineer – Deposition & Tailings Delivery is responsible for supporting the Project Manager – Tailings to deliver the EVA greenfield Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) deposition system. This position provides technical support and supervision during all project phases to ensure that Project designs are constructed to specified engineering standards and meet operational requirements regarding the Tailings deposition system and deposition landform.
This role will drive the development of the current deposition system feasibility level design to optimize business outcomes with consideration to facility staging and production profiles, quality requirements, construction methodologies along with cost and schedule targets.
Reporting to the Project Manager – Tailings and have peers including Senior Engineer – Embankments & Foundations, Senior Engineer – Decant & Dewatering and Senior Engineer – Projects.
This role will be based at our Brisbane project office during the project design phase with regular travel to site as required. The role will be required to transition to site, with the option of DIDO from Cloncurry Area or FIFO from Brisbane or Townsville. The DIDO/FIFO roster is 14 days on, 7 days off.
This is a maximum term role aligned with the project completion and close out, anticipated to be 31 May 2028.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring work undertaken complies with scope & meets operational requirements
- Preparing schedules for design work & obtaining approvals for flow sheets & drawings;
- Obtaining appropriate approvals of & documenting calculations, specifications, variations etc;
- Supervising work & ensuring it meets quality, cost & time constraints;
- Monitoring progress & identifying potential problems in respect of budgets, schedules, engineering standards;
- Liaison with the Project Manager, design team, operations, service providers & other contractors on an ongoing basis;
- Ensuring project teams operate in a safe & healthy manner; and
- Resolving potential issues or referring them to the Project Manager.
Qualifications
- (Essential) Engineering Degree or equivalent in a related field eg. Geotechnical or mechanical.
- (Essential) Substantial experience (7+ years) in project engineering and management.
- (Essential) Substantial experience (5+ years) in technical fields including tailings and piping.
- Sound understanding of engineering principles concerned with slurry piping and tailings deposition planning.
- Experience in construction management and quality control requirements.
- Demonstrated excellence in Safety leadership.
- Demonstrated experience in relationship-based Contractor management.
Personal Attributes and Abilities
- Forward looking, pragmatic and considered decision maker.
- A problem solver with an eye for detail that can maintain project pace.
- Ability to operate in a high stake and pressure environment.
- Team player that is confidant to speak-up and raise concerns.
