Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all.

Find out more about us and our purpose.

Your Opportunity

The Local Community Coordinator plays a central role in the WA Advance to Zero initiative, working alongside the WA Alliance and local partners to make homelessness in Geraldton rare, brief and once-off. This role brings together government, community services and local stakeholders to drive coordinated, place-based responses that create lasting change.

Working across a complex environment that includes both Mission Australia and WA Alliance structures, the position requires confidence, initiative and the ability to influence without formal authority. This is an on-site position based in Geraldton, where you will act as the local lead for the initiative, strengthening community connections, guiding collaborative action, and supporting continuous improvement through strong governance, communication and data-informed practice.

You will operate with a high degree of autonomy while remaining closely connected to the broader team, ensuring local efforts align with state-wide priorities and evidence-based approaches such as Housing First.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead local coordination of the Advance to Zero initiative in Geraldton, working closely with the WA Alliance and community partners to progress shared goals.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with government departments, local councils, community organisations and service providers to strengthen collaboration.
  • Facilitate and coordinate stakeholder meetings, rough sleeper coordination groups and case conferencing processes, ensuring clear actions and follow-up.
  • Develop, document and monitor local action plans that align with the program framework and support effective implementation.
  • Support data collection, by-name list processes and analysis to inform local priorities, measure impact and guide decision-making.
  • Prepare reports, briefings, submissions and correspondence, and contribute to grant applications and funding opportunities where required.
  • Represent the initiative at community meetings, training sessions, media engagements and relevant forums, including delivery of training related to homelessness survey tools.

Requirements for Success

  • Demonstrated experience in community development and/or homelessness services, with an understanding of Housing First principles.
  • Strong existing networks in Geraldton or the ability to quickly establish trusted relationships across the local community.
  • Tertiary qualification in Community Development, Community Services or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across complex and mixed management environments, exercising influence without formal position power.
  • Well-developed written skills, including experience preparing reports, submissions and data-informed briefings.
  • Sound computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite and stakeholder or project management systems, with the ability to analyse and interpret data.
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to work respectfully and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Full driver licence with no restrictions.
  • Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your Benefits

To ensure our employees feel valued, empowered, and celebrated, we provide a range of employee benefits including:

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support.
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Extra leave available including an additional public holiday, additional annual leave day on your work anniversary and the opportunity to purchase further annual leave.
  • Lead local coordination of the Advance to Zero initiative in Geraldton, working closely with the WA Alliance and community partners to progress shared goals.
