Background

Harmony is the largest gold producer by volume in South Africa and is a significant operator of gold tailings retreatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, Harmony owns and operates the Hidden Valley mine and owns 50% of the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. In Australia, Harmony owns the high-grade CSA copper mine in Cobar, NSW and is constructing the Eva Copper Mine in Cloncurry, QLD with first production targeted for the second half of the 2028 calendar year. These assets are supported by the Harmony Australasia regional corporate office located in Milton, Brisbane.

Position Description

Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent the Senior Drill & Blast Engineer is responsive for ensuring the effective completion of all drill and blast plans consistent to short-term mine planning activities for day-to-day pit operations, including scheduling, reconciliation, reporting, conduct of meetings and supervision of graduate and Drill & Blast Engineers.

Critical to this role is also to undertake drill and blast design improvements that will minimise ore dilution, reduce wall damages, reduce cost, and improve productivity while at the same time providing sufficient blasted stocks for digging. Adherence to all statutory requirements and Company Safety, Health and Environmental standards and procedures is paramount to this role.

Location: Hidden Valley Mine, Papua New Guinea

This role will be offered as a FIFO opportunity from/to Australia working on a 16/12-day roster.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and ensure the continuous improvement of safety best practice in line with MCGL Safety Policy and Systems.
  • Ensure all activities are in compliance with MCGL's Environmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure drill and blast designs, tie ups and charge plans are completed consistently in a timely manner.
  • Directly involve and ensure 2 weekly drill and blast schedule is provided for all the production rigs and presentation of the schedule and blasting plan at the weekly mine planning meetings.
  • Responsible for ensuring that D&B tools and equipment such as cameras, blast vibration monitor, and other consumables for D&B is well kept and maintained.
  • Direct involvement in the development of at least three blast master’s for each pit stages by taking into account all the inputs from Geology, Geotech, Operations and Mine Planning.
  • Provide EOM D&B Physicals report in a timely manner without any discrepancies.
  • Ensure post blast inspections are completed after every shot.
  • Develop and participate in the QA/QC process.
  • Ensure explosive consumption is tracked by collecting and filing shotfirer returns.
  • Mentor and develop graduate engineers during their D&B rotation.
  • Lead subordinates to deliver desired results for the department and the overall mine plan.
  • Safely & actively participates in incident investigations and ICAMS when required.
  • Clearly identify D&B risks and put forward mitigation action plans to minimise impacts to the D&B Plan delivery.
  • Review and development of Safe Working Procedures (SWPs), standards and templates and making sure that it is consistent and relevant.
  • Maintain and manage a robust process for D&B tracking and reporting on daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine Engineering.
  • Minimum 7 years’ engineering experience in mining.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Suite and mining software (Surpac, Vulcan, MineSight, AutoCAD).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Mine Workers Health Surveillance Certificate
