Residential Worker

CatholicCare Tasmania is the primary social services agency of the Catholic Church across Tasmania. We have 60 years’ experience delivering a wide range of services and support to improve individual, family and community wellbeing. Our services are available and open to all with a particular focus on families, young people and children.

The Bringing Baby Home team providing 24/7 support to parent/s at high risk of having their baby removed by Child Safety Services. The program runs for 12 weeks at a time, depending on the needs of the family. The position will provide support in areas such as establishing feeding, settling and safe sleeping routines including wake shifts for parent/s and their baby, supporting parent-child interactions, practical support to attend appointments and support for parents to manage the cooking and cleaning of the house.

How you will make an impact

  • Participate in shifts across a 24/7 roster including the need for awake shifts from time to time, depending on the needs of the baby
  • Complete general household tasks including shopping, cooking and cleaning and oversee that these tasks are followed through to ensure the effective running of the house
  • Identify and actively seek opportunities for parent/s to develop the skills required to look after their baby
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of trauma on the behaviours of parent/s and their baby
  • Support the participation of parents in all aspects of their case plan
  • Participate in transition planning for parent/s and their baby
  • Commitment to ensuring that all files, documents and records are maintained according to Agency policy and procedure and legislation
  • Respond appropriately to any crisis within a House, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals and as outlined CatholicCare policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of current business technologies such as Microsoft Office applications, mobile phones and client/ service databases
  • Keep accurate financial record of petty cash expenses
  • Have the ability to keep accurate case notes and provide handover for staff during shifts.

Essential Requirements

  • Qualification requirements: Certificate IV in Youth Worker, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education or Care, Social Work, Community Services, or related field and equivalent experience.
  • Provide First Aid Certificate, or ability to attain a Provide First Aid certificate within 3 months of commencement of employment, to be renewed every three years with a CPR refresher to be renewed every year.
  • Satisfactory national and relevant international police checks, to be completed on a 3 yearly basis from commencement.
  • Must maintain current and valid Working with Vulnerable People registration; and must carry evidence of this at all times.
  • Maintaining a valid and current Australians driver’s licence is a requirement of this role.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of early childhood development and supporting appropriate parent-child interactions.
  • Experience in providing parent/s with support in areas such as feeding, settling and safe sleeping routines.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills which include the ability to negotiate, liaise and consult with parents, colleagues and other service providers.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to work according to the baby’s needs and the ability to participate in a 24/7 roster.
  • Possess a sound knowledge of relevant statutory requirements, including Mandatory Reporting, Workplace Health and Safety, Duty of Care, Privacy and Confidentiality, Children, Young People and their Families Act and Anti-discrimination legislation.
