Ko Mātou – About Us

Kia Hanga I Te Ao, E Ora Ai, E Tupu Ai, Te Tangata Me Te Kainga. At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.

Mō te tūranga - About the role

As a Manager, Controls Testing within 1LOD Non‑Financial Risk (NFR), you’ll be accountable for delivering high‑quality independent first‑line control testing. You’ll translate enterprise risk standards and testing methodologies into clear testing plans and quality expectations, ensuring control testing is risk‑based, well‑governed, and delivered to agreed scope and timeframes. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, you’ll help uplift the quality and consistency of control testing execution, strengthen risk awareness across the business, and provide expert insight and constructive challenge to improve control outcomes.

This role is suited to someone with proven assurance experience (1st, 2nd or 3rd line) and the confidence to test, challenge, and influence at pace. Experience in Institutional banking would be advantageous given the nature and complexity of the portfolio.

Banking is changing and we’re changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you’ll be building your future, while helping to build ours.

Role Location: Auckland or Wellington

Role Type: Permanent, Fulltime

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like?

The Manager, Controls Testing is a dynamic and impactful role with a broad range of responsibilities. Some of your day-to-day activities may include the below:

  • Delivering independent 1LOD control testing across complex processes, products, and customer journeys, assessing both control design and operating effectiveness
  • Leading and executing higher risk and judgement based testing activities that are well evidenced, methodologically sound, and aligned to enterprise standards and regulatory expectations
  • Providing senior oversight of 1LOD control testing outcomes through targeted quality assurance reviews, ensuring consistency, strong judgement, evidence quality, and adherence to audit, regulatory, and enterprise requirements.
  • Producing high quality documentation, workpapers, and governance artefacts that meet audit, regulatory, and enterprise requirements
  • Performing thematic and cross portfolio analysis of testing results to identify and escalate control environment weaknesses, systemic issues, and emerging risk exposure
  • Translating testing results into clear, prioritised insights that articulate risk implications and influence business led remediation planning
  • Driving enhancements to control testing approaches through greater use of data and automation, to improve testing quality, coverage, efficiency, and risk insight.
  • Acting as a testing specialist for specialist and/or complex controls (4.2 focus) and supporting capability uplift through technical coaching and peer review

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Previous assurance experience is a must — gained in any of the three lines of defence
  • Strong understanding of control testing methodologies, including design and operating‑effectiveness assessment
  • Strong knowledge of non‑financial risk frameworks, risk obligations, and regulatory standards
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct accurate, evidence‑based testing with strong assessment and documentation skills
  • Strong analytical capability. Able to interpret information and derive meaningful insights that inform senior decision-making
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to convey testing outcomes and risk messages effectively
  • Ability to engage with senior stakeholders, provide constructive challenge, clarify issues and escalate issues where required.
  • Experience in Institutional banking would be advantageous
  • Exposure to using risk systems, testing tools, and/or reporting platforms to track and document outcomes

You’re not expected to have 100% of these skills. At ANZ a growth mindset is at the heart of our culture, so if you have most of these things in your toolbox, we’d love to hear from you.
