About Studio Schools of Australia

Studio Schools of Australia (SSA) was established in 2019 to bring about a “system” level change in secondary education for Indigenous students in remote communities across northern Australia. This “system level” reform is based on well-established evidence of what works for Indigenous students, their families and communities, in a scalable, proven work-related model of education introduced at the Yiramalay / Wesley Studio School in the Kimberley, Western Australia, in 2010.

SSA’s mission is to enable Indigenous students to lead their own advancement and to take a valuable and meaningful place in their own communities and within Australia.

SSA is committed to being a child safe environment, and we actively promote the safety and wellbeing of all students. All staff are committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in the school environment.

Overview

The Maintenance Officer is responsible for ensuring that SSA’s school facilities are safe, clean, functional, and well-maintained. This role contributes to a positive learning environment by undertaking routine maintenance, repairs, and facility improvement projects.

This position reports to the Facilities Manager and ultimately to the Principal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out general maintenance and repair tasks across all school facilities, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and other trade-related duties.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify potential issues early and implement timely solutions.
  • Maintain detailed and up-to-date records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and service schedules for facilities and equipment.
  • Collaborate effectively with Indigenous staff, students, and community members to ensure facilities are culturally appropriate, functional, and safe.
  • Support health, safety, and compliance initiatives by reporting hazards, completing risk assessments, and adhering to workplace safety regulations.
  • Assist with the planning, preparation, and execution of special projects, renovations, and facility upgrades as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the Facilities Manager and/or Principal to support the operational needs of the school.

Skills and Capabilities

  • Proven experience in maintenance, repair, or facilities management across multiple trades (carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, painting).
  • Strong knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations, with the ability to identify hazards, complete risk assessments, and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritise work, and resolve maintenance issues efficiently and proactively.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work respectfully with colleagues, Indigenous staff, students, and community members in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Capacity to work independently, make decisions under pressure, and take initiative to maintain and improve school facilities.

Desirable

  • Certificate III or IV in Building and Construction, Trades, Facilities Management, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (manual preferred).
  • Working at Heights, Confined Space, and other relevant safety tickets are highly desirable.
  • Current WA Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check (NPC).
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance, repair, or facilities management across a variety of trades (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting).
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Experience working in remote or cross-cultural settings is highly desirable.

Employment

Due to Australian immigration regulations, applicants must have Australian work rights. We especially welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Applicants will be required to provide a current WA Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check (NPC).

All appointments at Studio Schools of Australia are subject to child protection legislation and pre-employment screening.
