Background information about the job or company

The position of Industry Officer provides operational and policy support to the CEO, Executive Officer and members. The role of the Industry Officer is to initiate, respond to and manage industry policy and service initiatives that support and benefit the members and industry.

This position is a key role, focussing on policy and services initiatives impacting on the broad themes of the industry productivity, technology, safety, legislative compliance, business sustainability, management and the development of people (including training and human resource issues).

Responsibilities or duties

Reporting to and supporting the CEO and Industry Officer, key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and work with the Executive Committee, members and staff.
  • Provide advice to members on matters relevant to waste management and related areas.
  • Manage the provision of training courses, as required, and ensure these courses meet the requirements of stakeholders. Including the presenting of such courses, when required.
  • Represent the CEO and the Association on external industry-level Committees, Working Groups and Forums.
  • Advocate Association and industry policy positions to governments, government departments & statutory authorities, the union movement and to the community generally.
  • Manage projects initiated in pursuit of the aims and objectives of the Association.
  • Manage, in conjunction with the CEO, the financial performance of the Association.
  • Assist in the development, co-ordination and management of events, conferences.
  • Support the CEO and the Executive Team in the enhancement of existing services and knowledge products and assist in the creation of new products and services that benefit members and industry stakeholders, including playing a key role with stakeholder engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Team and staff of the Association to further the aims and objectives of the Association.
  • Work towards maintaining and expanding the membership base.

Qualifications or requirements

The successful candidate will have experience working collaboratively with regulators, legislators and authorities and have in-depth experience and sound knowledge of relevant legislation. A high level of verbal and written communication skills together with excellent presentation skills with the ability to present in a public forum is expected.

A relevant qualification together with a background in the waste management/recycling sector would be highly desirable. Experience in policy advocacy at an industry or business level is ideal.

Any other provided details

This position is offered on a full-time permanent basis, on site in Port Melbourne. There will be out of hours requirements throughout the year for events such as the annual conference and breakfasts, so some flexibility is required. A valid drivers licence and own vehicle is a requirement. Please note this is not a hybrid position.
