Suburban Connect is a consortium of global leaders in tunnelling including CPB Contractors, Ghella and Acciona Construction delivering the Tunnels South package on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, on behalf of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA).

We have a broad range of roles available to build our diverse and inclusive workforce, including construction and engineering, planning and environmental management, corporate support, administration, communications and many others.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction, with tunnelling to start in 2026 and trains to be running by 2035.

Suburban Connect is constructing the 16kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley using 4 tunnel boring machines and a range of excavation methods. The works also include 55 cross passages, 2 tunnel portal structures, 2 station box excavations and associated supports.

Purpose of the role:

This role is responsible for providing night shift safety advisory support on a one of Melbourne's largest infrastructure projects. Working as part of the broader Safety team, the Night Shift Safety Advisor will maintain regular communication with Safety Managers and Construction Leads and will at times be required to work independently during night works.

The primary purpose of the role is to support Construction Delivery teams through the effective implementation of the Project’s Safety and Health Management System, ensuring consistent application of safety standards, proactive risk management, and the promotion of Suburban Connect’s One HSE Culture during night works.

Responsibilities or duties:

  • Work with Construction Delivery teams in planning and safely executing of high-risk construction activities.
  • Provide safety support and advice to the delivery team - demonstrating a sound understanding and adherence to the Project's Safety Management System.
  • Recommend or assist in the development of solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
  • Completing reviews of internal risk assessments, including Work Pack Risk Assessments and Safe Work Method Statements
  • Completing critical risk inspections and task observations in line with system requirements.
  • Support any on shift client safety walks, outlining current scope and proactively addressing any identified issues.
  • Develop hazard / risk specific guidance in the form of written technical guidance to project teams through to Toolbox Talks for onsite crews.
  • Review and analysis health and safety data and promote high performance on the project.
  • Ensure prompt incident follow up, including supporting initial response, injury management activities, and completing incident investigations.
  • Ensure efficient and effective shift to shift handover between safety team members.

Qualifications or requirements:

  • Formal qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
  • ICAM training or equivalent
  • Internal Auditor Qualifications (preferred, not essential)
  • Safety and Health experience (3 + years) in Construction and/or heavy industry and high-risk workplaces.
  • Knowledge in Safety and Health Management Systems
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health legislation and statutes, and ability to interpret any applicable statutes or legislation relevant to Project
  • Ability to lead high level investigations involving multiple internal and external parties.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of competency in Microsoft office suite, and the capability to learn other software applications
  • A self-starter who has the ability to work as part of a broader safety team, but also at times work autonomously given the shift arrangements on Project
