Responsibilities or duties

The HSEQ Coordinator is responsible for supporting the effective implementation of Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality (HSEQ) and security programs across vessel operations. Through the development and application of relevant policies, procedures and initiatives, the role drives continual improvement in HSEQ and security practices. The position works closely with vessels and shore-based management to ensure compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory requirements, while supporting the overall effectiveness of HSEQ outcomes across the organisation. The role also acts as Deputy Company Security Advisor under the ISPS Code and Security Advisor under DISP requirements.

Major Responsibilities

  • Support the achievement of Teekay’s strategic and operational goals by providing HSEQ leadership and expertise across vessel and operational activities.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to improve safety, environmental and security performance and ensure regulatory and company compliance.
  • Work closely with the Regional HSEQ Manager to support and oversee HSEQ functions across vessel operations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, across the organisation and with client HSEQ representatives.
  • Maintain professional competence, knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform all assigned responsibilities.
  • Undertake additional tasks and assignments as directed by the Regional HSEQ Manager.

HSEQ Performance and Risk Management

  • Drive continual HSEQ improvement and effective risk management across vessel operations.
  • Establish, review and enhance processes to monitor and continuously improve HSEQ performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and procedures within the management system and support their implementation.
  • Develop and implement HSEQ improvement objectives aligned with Regional HSEQ goals and work with Masters and operational leaders to achieve these outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and support on Polaris compliance requirements.

Vessel Risk Management and Assurance

  • Monitor and manage operational risk exposure across vessels.
  • Ensure the effectiveness of vessel risk review processes.
  • Review vessel Permits to Work and associated risk assessments.
  • Support vessel audits, assessments and inspections.
  • Deliver HSEQ training and guidance to seafarers as required.

Operational Support and Safety Culture

  • Contribute to quarterly Management Review processes.
  • Support shore teams and vessel operations to achieve Operational Leadership objectives.
  • Coach and mentor team members to promote a strong and proactive safety culture.
  • Conduct regular visits to vessels and operational sites to engage on HSEQ performance, company culture and safety expectations.
  • Assist vessels and operational sites during and following external inspections to minimise risk of adverse outcomes and ensure effective client responses.
  • Support operational integrations with focus on Commonwealth, State and Flag compliance requirements, certifications and HSEQ documentation.

Environmental Performance and Compliance

  • Monitor vessel environmental performance data and ensure required reporting to relevant regulatory bodies (e.g., IMO DCS).
  • Develop, implement and coordinate HSEQ and security initiatives aligned with regional HSEQ objectives.
  • Maintain close coordination with internal stakeholders and regional HSEQ teams to ensure alignment with company standards and initiatives.
  • Monitor industry developments, best practices and legislative changes relating to health, safety, environment and security and coordinate required actions.

Training, Audits and Compliance

  • Coordinate and deliver HSEQ training programs to ensure policies and processes are effectively implemented.
  • Support compliance with marine conventions, legislation and client requirements.
  • Support the ISM and ISO certification and audit programs.
  • Review audit findings and identify strategies to address improvement opportunities.
  • Provide analysis and feedback on the effectiveness of existing policies, procedures and initiatives.
  • Ensure effective internal audit management and closure of non-conformances, including corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support implementation and ongoing compliance with the ISM Code, including participation in the annual review process.
  • Oversee incident investigation processes (Levels 1–3) in accordance with company procedures and support or lead investigations as required.
  • Facilitate office and warehouse occupational health and safety management activities.
  • Support the development and maintenance of required WHS, risk and environmental management plans.

Security Responsibilities

  • Support security coordination across operations.
  • Act as Deputy Company Security Officer under the ISPS Code and Security Advisor under DISP requirements.
  • Ensure company procedures comply with the Defence Security Policy Framework and relevant legislation and are effectively implemented across operations.
  • Coordinate security clearance processes for personnel where required.
  • Ensure compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and verify that associated procedures are effectively implemented.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Clear understanding of Teekay’s Vision, strategic goals, organizational relationships and internal processes.
  • Knowledge of management systems and external certification requirements (ISM Code, ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001 and ISO55001)
  • Company Security Officer, Defence Security Management, Internal Auditor and incident investigation certifications or experience is desirable
  • Demonstrates analytical, problem solving, time management, project management, coordination and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in HSEQ functions in the marine industry.
  • Demonstrates teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and develop resources effectively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the marine industry.
  • Sea going experience as a Senior Officer (Defence or Civilian Vessels).
  • An MSIC holder and Australian Government NV1 Security Clearance (or ability to obtain).
